Who Wrote This?

Yesterday evening, I had the following conversation with my amazing mommy.

Becky: Mom, I'm having a hard time. I need help. I need to talk about Bowe so I can find the truth and get rid of the lies and fear in my head.

Mom: Okay.

Becky: I was doing okay and not freaking out, but then I saw a guy on Fox say mean things about Bowe. They're talking about him like he's a thing, instead of a person with family and friends who love him.

Mom: I know, sweetie.

Becky: I'm scared about what might happen to Bowe.

Mom: God knows what will happen to Bowe.

Becky: I know. But I can't seem to focus on that. What should I do?

Mom: Get your head out of the news, and go to the Psalms.

Becky: Oh yeah! ...I forgot...

Mom: That happens to me too. It's almost like remembering I need to read the Psalms calms me down so much that I don't even need to read them! But I read them anyway.

Becky: Yeah... Okay. Thank you. I'll do that. Did you see my blog post? It has a clip of Dad's interview on it.

Mom: I'm going there now.

[pause]

Mom: [mumble reading]

[pause]

Mom: [distinctly and clearly] "Dad is right. We don’t have to sit on our hands, watching video clips and worrying. We are compelled to fall to our knees and implore our sovereign God to intervene, to keep Bowe safe, and to bring him home."

[pause]

Mom: Who wrote this?

Becky: ...me.

Mom: So...

Becky: Well, I was doing okay, but then the Fox guy threw me for a loop.

Mom: That's okay. But at least I know you know what to do to regain your focus.

Becky: Yeah... Okay. [sigh] Thanks, Mom.

Mom: Anytime. Just read your own blog posts...

Mom and I like the fact that I post about stuff I need help with myself. I think God does that on purpose. He doesn't use perfect people. He takes our weaknesses and covers them with His strength.

And Mom was right, of course. She's so great at pointing me in the right direction. She is a wise, wise mommy. I, her daughter, rise up and call her blessed.

But surpassing Mom's wisdom is the wisdom of God given to us in His Word. Last night, I took Mom's advice and did two things: I surrendered my laptop to Jeff, who hid it from me. Then I grabbed my Bible and headed for the Psalms.

I hope the comfort I found there will comfort you as well:

Psalm 46

1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.

5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

8 Come and see the works of the LORD,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields with fire.

10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."

11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
